AT CITY HALL

Property Tax Proposal — Key Numbers and What Comes Next

Tomorrow, Tuesday May 26 at 3:00 PM, the City Council holds a budget work session on the tentative FY2026-2027 budget. The Mayor is expected to formally state that the proposed budget includes a property tax increase to fund public safety.

The city published the figures on May 5. Here is what they show:

  • The proposed increase would generate $6,958,141 in additional annual revenue, a 245% increase in what the city currently collects in property taxes.

  • For the owner of an average $500,000 home, the estimated increase is $359.79 per year, bringing the total annual city property tax bill to $506.64.

  • For an average business (assessed at $2,554,303), the estimated increase is $4,705.86 per year.

  • The money is specifically designated for the Utah County Sheriff's Office — Eagle Mountain Division contract, including adding deputies to keep pace with the city's growth.

The public has three formal opportunities to weigh in before anything is finalized:

  • Interim Budget Public Hearing — Tuesday, June 16 at 7 PM

  • Truth-in-Taxation Public Hearing — Thursday, August 6 at 6 PM

  • Final Budget Public Hearing — Tuesday, August 18 at 7 PM

All three hearings will be held at City Hall, Council Chambers. The city's Truth in Taxation page has the full details and a public comment form. Tomorrow's budget work session agenda is available here.

Planning Commission — Preview for Tomorrow Night

Tuesday, May 26 — Work session at 5:30 PM, policy session at 6:30 PM Eagle Mountain City Council Chambers, 1650 E Stagecoach Run

One action item is on tomorrow's agenda: a variance request for a small commercial development near Tickville Wash on Pony Express Pkwy. City planning staff recommends denial, though staff supports the project moving forward through a development agreement instead. The meeting is open to the public. Full agenda here. Thursday's issue will carry the recap.

COMING UP IN JUNE

Summer is officially here. Here is a look at what is ahead in the first weeks of June.

Guns and Hoses Pickleball Tournament — Sunday, June 1

Eagle Mountain's firefighters and law enforcement officers face off on the pickleball court. The city mentioned it at last week's council meeting, but time and location details have not been published yet. I suggest you check out the City’s events page for updates, or contact Eagle Mountain City directly.

Food Truck Rally — Thursday, June 4

The city's summer food truck series gets underway with its first Thursday rally. Details are still being finalized. Keep an eye on the city events page as the date gets closer.

Saturday, June 6 — A Stacked Day

June 6 is a Saturday worth putting on the calendar now. Four things are happening:

PRCA Rodeo — June 11-13

Three nights of professional rodeo close out the Pony Express Days schedule. Performances at the Pony Express Memorial Arena start at 7 PM each night. Full details here.

Splash Days — Saratoga Springs, June 10-13

If you want a rodeo this weekend before the Pony Express Days version in June, the Fort Herriman PRCA Rodeo runs Thursday through Saturday at W&M Butterfield Park in Herriman (6212 W 14200 S), about 20 minutes away. Gates open at 5:30 PM each night. Details here.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES

Eagle Mountain residents can pick up free landfill passes through the city — useful if summer cleanup is on the list this week.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

Granite Credit Union — Now Open in Eagle Mountain

Eagle Mountain has a new credit union. Granite Credit Union opened its Eagle Mountain branch at 3569 E Maverik Lane, with a Chamber ribbon cutting this Wednesday, May 27 at 3:00 PM. For those who miss it, the public Grand Opening Celebration runs Saturday, June 6 from 10 AM to 2 PM at the same location — landing right alongside the Farmers Market season opener and Demolition Derby that evening.

Granite is a Utah-based credit union. The Eagle Mountain branch adds a local financial services option for residents who prefer a community institution over a national bank.

I went on a hike with my family yesterday up to the top of Turtle Hill and got an amazing view of Cedar Valley and Utah Valley. I couldn’t help but snap some photos and share them with you here. If you haven’t been on that hike yet, you should give it a go. Just don’t forget sunscreen and hats because there isn’t any shade. And if you have little ones, be ready for them to tucker out because it’s a bit of an incline.

View towards southwest Cedar Valley.

View overlooking the ranches.

View towards south east with the BYU “Y” visible.

View eastward overlooking Utah Lake and Pleasant Grove with the “G” visible.

And to top it off, here’s one with me and my dog, Skye. Thank you to everyone who’s supported me thus far.

See you around,

— Colten
