Iron Fire. Taken by Colten McEwan in between Elberta and Mosida on S 12800 W St.

Hello Eagle Mountain. Colten here.

It was nice to have some rain last night. I hope that helps clear the air a bit. There's another chance for storms today, so keep that in mind if you're heading out. Here's what's happening this weekend.

WILDFIRE UPDATE

Taken by Colten McEwan in between Elberta and Mosida on S 12800 W St.

The Iron Fire near Eureka in Juab County has now burned more than 37,000 acres. As of Wednesday evening, crews had reached 23% containment, which is a real improvement from Sunday when the fire was completely uncontained. More than 500 firefighters are working the fire. The town of Eureka is still under a mandatory evacuation order, and US Highway 6 remains closed between Elberta and Eureka. For the latest, visit Utah Fire Info.

Closer to home, a new fire started Monday evening on Lake Mountain near Saratoga Springs. The Dutchman Fire burned approximately 143 acres before crews brought it to full containment on Tuesday. No homes or structures were lost. The smoke from that fire and others burning across the state has pushed air quality into unhealthy ranges across Utah County this week. Before spending time outside, check current conditions at air.utah.gov.

One more thing as you head into the weekend: forecasters are warning of high winds and very low humidity arriving Friday and continuing through Sunday morning. Those are the kinds of conditions that let fires start and spread fast. Eagle Mountain is not under any orders or warnings, but fire restrictions are in effect on open land outside city limits across Utah County. Be thoughtful this weekend about anything that could spark a fire.

PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS

Tuesday's primary narrowed the field for November's general election. In the mayoral race, incumbent Mayor Jared Gray will face Melissa Clark in November. Tom Westmoreland, who previously served as mayor, did not advance. On the City Council side, four candidates will compete for two seats in November, and whoever wins will help shape decisions on how the city's expanded budget gets used, the annexation plan, attainable housing, and more that's currently moving through City Hall.

AT CITY HALL

The Planning Commission wrapped up its June 23 meeting with two votes worth noting.

The commission voted unanimously to forward the updated Annexation Policy Plan to City Council. The plan includes the newly added Area 7: land southeast of Eagle Mountain near Utah Lake and Redwood Road that the city is considering for potential future expansion — in part because it may contain rare earth materials. If you'd like to weigh in before the Council takes it up, email [email protected].

The commission also voted unanimously to send the Triumph Subdivision attainable housing proposal to City Council. The project would add four groups of homes built at higher density near Lake Mountain Road south of Pole Canyon Boulevard, with pricing restrictions in place to keep them more affordable than the surrounding development. That proposal now moves to Council for scheduling.

The next public opportunity on the property tax question is the Truth-in-Taxation hearing on August 6 at 6 PM at City Hall — this is the formal public meeting where residents can comment before the Council takes a final vote on August 18 at 7 PM. Full background here.
