Happy Monday! Colten here.

I don't know about you, but I had a bit of an up and down weekend. I got Friday off, Saturday was full of food and games, and Sunday was genuinely relaxing. But I also had to go to the ER (son ripped his entire fingernail off), search frantically for a missing dog in the dark on the night of the 4th, and didn't get enough sleep. Now I'm back at it again on Monday. HoW aBoUt YoU? 🥴 (I'm being dramatic here, but it was definitely an eventful weekend.)

Here's to hoping your week starts off great! Let's see what's going on this week.

CIVIC HIGHLIGHTS

Water pressure repair underway in three neighborhoods

The city is repairing a mechanical failure in one of its water pressure zones, affecting the Meadow Ranch, Cedar Pass Ranch, and Silver Lake areas. City rules require pressure to stay above 20 psi. If it drops below that, the city would have to issue a boil water notice, meaning residents would need to boil tap water before drinking or cooking with it until pressure is restored. To help avoid that, the city is asking residents in the affected zone, and anyone else who can pitch in, to cut back on outdoor watering until repairs are finished. Work starts Monday, July 6. See the city's notice for the affected-area map and updates.

Property tax increase: read the full breakdown

I published a full breakdown of the proposed 220.88% property tax increase on Friday, July 3, including what it would cost the average home, how it compares to other Utah cities, and the questions still unanswered ahead of the August 6 public hearing. If you missed it, you can read the full piece here.

If you have concerns, comments, or questions about the proposed increase, I'd recommend submitting a public comment to the city, attending the City Council meeting this Tuesday, or both.

City Council meets Tuesday with a full agenda

The City Council meets Tuesday, July 7. There's a work session at 4 p.m. and a policy session at 7 p.m. Three items stand out:

  • Senior housing: The Council will consider a new zoning rule meant to encourage more senior housing to be built in the city.

  • Future city growth: The Council will also consider an updated plan that lists seven areas outside city limits the city could consider annexing, or adding to the city, at some point in the future.

  • Power plant zoning: The Council will take up a new zoning rule that would allow certain types of power plants, including small nuclear reactors, to be built in approved locations. This has been debated in Eagle Mountain since December 2024, and was recently put on hold so newly elected council members could weigh in.

None of these would approve a project on a specific property right away. They would set the rules for how future proposals get reviewed. I'll have a full recap in Thursday's issue.

CDBG public comment period continues

The city's public comment period for its $466,979 federal Community Development Block Grant program remains open through August 4. Details and the proposed allocation are here.

Good news on the wildfire front

The Iron Fire and the Cherry Fire, which absorbed the smaller Maple Peak Fire in late June, are both now fully contained. Both fires are in central Utah's Juab and Tooele counties, well outside Eagle Mountain.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: SUNRISE SPEECH THERAPY

If your child is working on speech sounds, stuttering, or language delays, Sunrise Speech Therapy is right here in the Ranches. Founded by Kjirsten Keetch, MS, CCC-SLP, a pediatric speech-language pathologist with more than nine years of experience, the practice has grown into a team of five licensed therapists, each with a different specialty, from childhood apraxia of speech to augmentative communication to bilingual therapy in Spanish.

The practice offers a free 15-minute phone consultation for parents who aren't sure whether therapy is the right next step, and the smaller private-practice setting means more flexibility to meet a child where they're at. Sunrise serves families across Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, and the surrounding area, and currently holds a 5.0-star rating across 39 Google reviews.

Address: 4408 E Pony Express Pkwy, Suite D, Eagle Mountain
